About Deakin Preschool
The early childhood years lay important foundations for children’s future education. Young children should be given opportunities to explore and discover through play which will enable them to express themselves as creative individuals. During play, children learn from each other. The teacher’s role is to guide learning and extend upon the children’s interests. However, this pedagogy should be balanced with planned activities that foster language and literacy, mathematics and science concepts, cultural diversity and sustainability and caring for the environment in order to prepare the children for future learning while still focusing on the children’s interests, individuality and real-life issues. Considerable emphasis should be on creativity and self-expression, personal identity, meaning and having fun.
Deakin Preschool uses an integrated inquiry approach to curriculum. This process assists children to make connections and helps learning make sense. It is inclusive and fosters authentic links between curriculum areas. It helps students understand what they are learning and why they are learning, and it develops higher order thinking skills.
At Deakin Preschool, social skills which foster language development, independence, respect for others, confidence and a sense of fairness are explicitly taught which enable the children to learn to negotiate with each other, work cooperatively and manage their emotions in a positive way. In order for children to continue to learn, the educators must provide an environment that is safe, secure and celebrates diversity.
Education is a continuous learning journey where teachers, parents and children have a valuable opportunity to learn from one another, sharing equal status. Deakin Preschool is committed to equity and believes that all children have the capacity to succeed, to work together with others and to share ideas. In turn, children become responsible for their own learning. Educators at Deakin work to enhance children’s self-esteem, empowering them to see themselves as capable learners, encouraging individuality and teaching children to think critically and analytically. Enrolments
Children who turn four years of age, on or before 30th April are eligible to attend preschool.
Enrolments are accepted through the online enrolment form on the Education Directorate website from the first day of Term 2 of the year prior to your child starting preschool.
